How To Prepare For Your Child's First Dental Visit
As parents, you’ll introduce your child to many new experiences in the first year of life, helping them become familiar with their surroundings. One of the most exciting milestones of the first year is the moment that your child’s first tooth erupts. While teeth emerge at different times, dentists want you to know—your child’s first dental appointment should happen before their first birthday. Though baby teeth will not hang around forever, they are saving spaces for permanent teeth. Thus, keeping your child’s tiny teeth and gums clean and healthy is important. Here’s how to prepare for your child’s first dental visit.
Setting the Tone
Setting the tone for a successful and happy first dental appointment can make a difference in your child’s oral health for years to come. Prior to the visit, it’s a good idea to discuss the procedures of the first appointment with the dentist or hygienist. By doing so, parents may begin talking to their child about what to expect, and begin building excitement about their first visit. In some cases, you may practice looking in your child’s mouth, giving them an idea of what the dentist may do. Even so, it’s best to keep the conversation light and simple.
Chances are, your dentist will suggest scheduling your child’s appointment early in the day, especially if your child is under the age of 5. In most instances, the first visit will be short (15-20 minutes). Short, successful visits help build a child’s trust in the dentist, and will help if dental work needs to be done in the future.
Depending on the age, here are a few examples of what to expect at the first visit:
- Complete examination of the teeth, jaw, bite, and soft tissues and gums
- Gentle polishing of the teeth, and removal of plaque, if necessary
- X-rays
- Explanation of proper brushing techniques
- Application of Fluoride (if needed)
Parents must remember—the dentist and the team will work to put your child at ease by explaining every step of the appointment in a fun way. This may include teaching your child about different instruments and encouraging them to choose their own fruit-flavored toothpaste. We can all agree—when children are given the chance to participate in their dental visit, they are more likely to think of visiting the dentist as a fun, enjoyable experience.
